English 105: Advanced Composition


The following is an outline for English 105 library instruction. The instruction will be divided into three parts (an online exercise and two in-class sessions offered by librarians).

Library Assignment: Defining Research Needs (to be completed before the first class session)

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand your ENG 105 research assignment
  • Develop a topic statement
  • Develop a search strategy

Requirements:

  • Complete and submit the online Defining Research Needs Worksheet to your instructor and the librarian teaching your class
  • Assignment is due one week prior to library class session (see instructor for date)
  • Your instructor and librarian will assess and return your worksheet

First library class session: Locate Information

  • Your worksheet is returned for helpful suggestions and search strategies

Second library class session: Synthesize Information

  • Class activity Synthesis
    • Cluster keyword into concept groups
    • Name the concept groups
  • Group activity
    • Read, record and report on articles
    • Organize information into concept groups
    • Create and communicate results
