Copyright and Fair Use for Teachers

Welcome! In this tutorial, you will learn the basics of copyright and fair use and their applications in the K-12 classroom. The objectives of this tutorial are:

  • To give an overview of copyright law and the fair use guidelines for education
  • To apply copyright law and fair use guidelines to common scenarios that teachers face on a day-to-day basis
  • To assess your knowledge of copyright law and fair use guidelines after reviewing the information provided

This tutorial has three parts. First, you will read a document that outlines the guidelines for fair use in the classroom for various types of materials. You will then read a document that outlines the four tenets that determine fair use. After reading the documents, you will view a short video that illustrates how common situations that involve a judgement about fair use and copyright should be handled. Finally, you will take a short quiz to assess your knowledge of copyright and fair use in the classroom.

Step One: Read Hall Davidson's Chart on Copyright and Fair Use for Teachers

Step Two: Read about the Four Tenets of Fair Use

Step Three: View the short film, Copyright in the Classroom: What You Need to Know! (Quick Time movie)

Step Four: Take the online quiz. Make sure to enter your name and class section or you will not receive credit for the tutorial.
