Reference Resources

The Encyclopedia of Language and Linguistics. P 29. E48 1994 10 vols.

From Talking Drums to the Internet. An Encyclopedia of Communications Technology. P96.T42 G374 1997.

Body Talk. BF637.N66 M67 1994.

Identifies and interprets body signals as a form of communication.

Communication Yearbook. (Current 5 years). P 87 .C5974.

Includes literature reviews which summarize key developments in the discipline. It provides an authoritative treatment on a variety of subjects. Chapters in Communication Yearbook may be indexed in ComAbstracts or other article indexes (see "Journal Article Indexes" below), but these indexes will not provide full-text access to the chapters. A key value to the entries in Communication Yearbook is the bibliography of sources reviewed which accompanies each chapter. Earlier editions are shelved in the Fletcher Library stacks and are available for loan.

Handbook of Sociolinguistics. P40.H3426 1997.

A useful tool in outlining the social aspects of human communication.

Media

Videos can be an excellent way to enhance a presentation as well as provide an additional source of research for essays and papers. Videos may be borrowed for 7 days and may be booked for classroom use. Use the online catalog to identify videos on your topic by first doing a keyword search and then limiting the results to film/video.

Journal Article Indexes/Databases

Use indexes (also called databases) to find journal articles (newspaper, magazine, journals).  Since Communication Studies is very interdisciplinary, indexes in other subject areas, such as Business, Psychology, or Sociology may be useful.  Below is a list of key indexes for Communication Studies research. For more indexes, including indexes for different subject areas, use the Database Finder, linked from the Fletcher Library homepage.

Off-campus access to these resources requires authentication with an ASURite ID and password.

Most of these indexes contain both full-text articles or link to articles using the "Get it @ ASU" link.

Communication Abstracts
This index covers all aspects of Communication Studies. It is broader in scope and coverage than ComAbstracts; and includes abstracts of books as well as journal articles.

Communication & Mass Media Complete
Provides quality research in areas related to communication and mass media. This database is the merging of two databases in the fields of communication and mass media studies -- CommSearch (formerly produced by the National Communication Association (NCA)), and Mass Media Articles Index (formerly produced by Pennsylvania State University).

Academic Search Premier
A multidisciplinary database which includes both scholarly and general interest journals.

Sociological Abstracts
Contains abstracts of articles pertaining to the social sciences.

PsychInfo
Abstracts of books and articles on psychology and related topics. Good place to look for research studies, analyses, and data.
