Current events can present the researcher with special difficulties because the event may be too recent to have been written about or there may not be significant amounts of reliable information available.

The sources listed here may help you identify a topic to research.  They can also assist you in your search to locate arguments and evidence that disagree with or support your position


Academic Search Premier, 1990-

Multi-disciplinary database providing indexing for over 8,000 journals including full-text for nearly 4,700 titles, including more than 3,600 peer-reviewed publications. Also indexes The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and The Christian Science Monitor.

 

CQ Researcher

Provides balanced reporting on controversial current events and social, political, economic and international issues. Includes issue summaries, historical perspectives, recent developments, opposing viewpoints, and additional research resources.  Updated weekly.

 

Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center

A full-text database providing differing points of view on current social issues. The database brings together viewpoint articles, contextual topic overviews, government and organizational statistics, biographies of social activists, court cases, profiles of government agencies and special interest groups, newspaper and magazine articles, as well as links to more than 1,800 reviewed and subject-indexed web sites.

Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature, 1983-

Indexes articles from the most popular general-interest magazines published in the U.S. & Canada. Covers all subjects & such general news areas as current events, business, fashion, politics, crafts, education, history, sports, food, & science.

Access World News (formerly Newsbank), 1980s-

Complete full-text content of local and regional newspapers.

Alt-Press Watch, 1987-

Full-text of alternative press magazines, journals and newspapers. Provides a broad diversity of perspectives and viewpoints.

Arizona Daily Star, 1991-
Indexes Tucson's local newspaper. Covers local and regional Arizona news.

Arizona Republic Newsbank, 1999-
Indexes the Phoenix local newspaper. Covers local and regional Arizona news. Arizona Republic articles from 1987 through 2000 are accessible via CD-ROM at the West campus library reference desk.

Ethnic NewsWatch, 1960-

Full-text of ethnic, minority and native press newspapers, magazines and journals. Provides a broad diversity of perspectives and viewpoints. Represents the diversity of the American population in ways that are not seen in the mainstream media.

Global Newsbank, 1996-
Indexes translated news from around the world. Includes articles from magazines, wire services, and government documents.

 

Proquest Newspapers, 1982-

Covers U.S. and international news in business and finance. Includes Access to Arizona Newspapers, Barron's, Asian Wall Street Journal, Wall Street Journal, Wall Street Journal Europe and Washington Post. Includes some full text
