ASU Video Collections

Fletcher Library maintains a video collection in DVD, VHS, and videodisc formats.  Our collection does not include 16mm films. Videos in the collection support the curriculum at ASU West. Subject Librarians select titles for the collection. Faculty play an active role in recommending titles.

Videos circulate for one week. See Borrowing Media for more detailed information including any restrictions on requesting and booking.

Hayden Library (Tempe campus) has a video collection that supports the Tempe campus curriculum, and houses the WorldFest Video Archive. For more information about videos in Hayden Library connect to Video Resources at Hayden Library. There are also smaller, specialized video collections in the other ASU libraries. The ASU Libraries Catalog includes records for videos in all ASU libraries' collections.

ASU faculty, students and staff use the online Request function to have videos from ASU Library locations sent to Fletcher Library for your use. To schedule use of a video on a specific date, use the Media Booking Service.

Community borrowers may request videos though the Request/Renew Materials Form.

Media Booking Service

Media Booking is a support service for classroom instruction and research at Arizona State University's West campus. It arranges for use of specific videos on specific days. For more information see the Media Booking Service page.

Searching for Videos

The ASU Libraries Catalog includes videos in all ASU Libraries' collections. There is no separate listing of videos. Locate videos using the same search techniques used for books:

  • Author (Director, actor, screenwriter, or other names)
  • Title
  • Keyword

To search for videos on a particular topic, use one or more keywords with "videorecording."
Examples:

anorexia videorecording
Reagan, Ronald videorecording
Hamlet videorecording

Catalog records for videos identify the format (DVD, VHS, or videodisc), indicate which ASU library owns the item, and include a summary describing the content of the video. Keyword searching includes words in the summary, providing access to videos even if the title is not known.

With more detailed searches (author, title, or keyword) use the catalog's "Limit this Search" option to narrow results by material type "Video/Film". Use "Where Item is located" to also limit the search to videos in the Fletcher Library collection.

For more information on and tips for searching the ASU Libraries Catalog see How to Search the Library Catalog.

Closed Captioned Videos

Closed captioning provides on-screen display of  spoken portions of a video. All televisions sold in the U.S. manufactured after 1993 and 13" or larger include a decoder for displaying closed captioning.

Many videos in the Fletcher Library collection have closed captioning. Catalog records for these videos indicate they are captioned.

For an alphabetic list of closed captioned videos in ASU libraries, search the ASU Libraries Catalog using the Library of Congress Subject Heading: "Video recordings for the hearing impaired."

For a list of closed captioned videos on a specific topic,  search the ASU Libraries catalog by Keyword. Using the Limit function, select "Words in the SUBJECT" and enter "hearing impaired".

Most foreign language films in the Fletcher Library collection are not closed captioned but have English language subtitles. See Foreign Language Films for more information.

Feature Films

The Fletcher Library collection includes numerous feature films selected to support the curriculum. Many of these are foreign language films. The collection also includes all commercially available titles from the Library of Congress National Film Registry and the American Film Institute's list: 100 Years/100 Movies.

For a complete listing of Fletcher Library's holdings of these films, please check these web pages:
